article on pathetic attendance for the Kentucky game.

how pathetic was it you ask? consider this..The announced crowd for Saturday's contest would have been the smallest during 2012 season, which featured a winless record for the Golden Eagles.

USM senior associate athletic director Stephen Pugh, who handles external operations, said that the number announced Saturday accounted for all tickets sold and distributed for the game.

“That was the number of tickets we had out for the game,” Pugh said Tuesday. “That included tickets sold, comp tickets and how many students were scanned in.”

Re: article on pathetic attendance for the Kentucky game.

just how out of touch, young and naive' are the people we hire in marketing here? please consider the following statement by little Stephen.

“I think it's something where we obviously want to grow it,” Pugh said. “I don't know if disappointed is the correct word. We want to continue to build the fan base. Driving revenue is really our big focus. That comes over time. We're continuing to enhance the game day experience and provide top notch customer service.”

oh ok Stephen. thank you for your hard work and dedication. you seem to really be on top of this and have a handle on the situation.

Re: article on pathetic attendance for the Kentucky game.

Also included in the number were the band and USM staff on hand at Roberts Stadium.

maybe next game we can count players, refs and the people that just tailgate but never go in.

Re: article on pathetic attendance for the Kentucky game.

There's nothing that can fix this.   We've been battling this issue for 40 years.  It's been the topic of USM conversations for the last 25 years...hell, since I've been in college.   "build the endzone in they said, build it and they will come."   NOPE.  But it sure looks good.     We just don't have a big enough die hard fan base.   And this horrible ass conference has turned away even the most ardent fan.  It's sad really.   We used to think we were above playing the likes of Memphis, Tulane, Tulsa, Central Florida, South Florida, etc.  Now we'd give anything to be playing those sorry ass teams again.   We are stuck with playing a bunch of teams that are nothing more than off week tune up games for better schools.   ALL OF our CUSA opponents are basically  Homecoming opponents for the bigger teams and now we have fallen into that group.   The only way we can reverse this even a little bit is to get out of this godforsaken conference.  It's literally killing our program.  I don't know, maybe going independent should at least be considered......sounds f'n stupid but shit, all options should be on the table at this point.  But of course, you could kiss goodbye even the scraps of TV money we would receive from our conference affiliation and bowl income.   So who f'n knows, but our AD's sole goal needs to be getting us out of this f'n conference or you might as well shut her down.

you can't get out of this conference. some of you are still in denial of that fact. there is no place to go. and even if there was an opening in another conference we simply do not have the budget that a conference commissioner would approve. and not one AD within that conference would give a vote of confidence to our University either. next year la tech will pass us, if they have not already this year, and USM will have the lowest budget in all of CUSA. there comes a time for acceptance of this. you all should have recognized and accepted this by now. many donors and fundraisers have jumped ship already. they had enough. stop with this  "hope" that we will get into a different conference. it ain't happening man. all of our old girlfriends have moved on with their lives, they don't want us back. get on with your life man.

you might as well shut her down.

that's an idea, UAB shut down for a couple years and quadrupled their attendance and almost doubled their budget. now that was a genius ploy by that University and it worked.

Another factor: our fanbase is elderly. Most of our fans are older because they grew up back in the day when we were halfway worth a shit.  When those people die, we're even more fucked than we are now. Very few younger people are fans of Southern Miss.

Re: article on pathetic attendance for the Kentucky game.

The wild card is the 3 games against Mississippi State. Winning just 1 of those is going to get everyone's attention, yes, even the many people that jumped ship. Not saying they'd be aboard the SS TTT again, but it'd get their attention for sure.
