Those offensive linemen are all pretty big. I think finding five of them who can do a passable job shouldn't be too difficult, especially with Ito Smith to block for.

Bring back Reed V. "Pie" TurkPalmer Eustachy.

On one hand, Southern Miss will feature some of the best talent it has had in a number of years this fall.

On the other, the Golden Eagles — who open the season against Kentucky at 3 p.m. Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium — will face plenty of uncertainty in 2017.

Here are the three most prominent strengths for Jay Hopson’s team this season, as well as its three most glaring deficiencies.

Strength: Running back

Senior Ito Smith is a fine place to start for any team. Fourth already in Southern Miss history with 3,123 career rushing yards, the versatile athlete is aiming to put together his best season and go out on a high note. The difference between this year and most others is the Golden Eagles are as deep as they’ve been at running back. Tez Parks has made major strides toward realizing his full potential and the addition of the speedy T’Rod Daniels gives Southern Miss even more options. Junior Collin Kilcrease will serve as the team’s short-yardage/goal line back.

Weakness: Quarterback

Less of a weakness and more of an unknown, but you get the idea. The Golden Eagles have four quarterbacks on scholarship and they’ve combined to make two starts at the FBS level (Keon Howard). Kwadra Griggs and Howard are considered the frontrunners for the starting job but, again, neither have very much experience. Freshman Marcelo Rodriguez has proven he’s a talented athlete throughout training camp, but the coaching staff would prefer to redshirt him, if at all possible.

Strength: Receiver

Led by Allenzae Staggers, the Golden Eagles — like running back — are as deep at the receiver position as they’ve ever been. Staggers rattled off 1,165 receiving yards in his first season in Hattiesburg. Add Korey Robertson, Isaiah Jones, Jordan Mitchell, Trevor Terry, Quez Watkins, Chase Whitehead and Jaylond Adams to the mix and it could be a banner year at Southern Miss. All are all capable of starting and playing significant minutes. Throw in tight ends Julian Allen and Jay’Shawn Washington, and the group of top-notch pass-catchers swells even more.

Weakness: Offensive line

Much like the quarterback position, Erik Losey’s group doesn’t have much in the way of experience. Outside of seniors Devin Farrior and Jerry Harris, there are sophomores Ty Pollard and Drake Dorbeck and freshman Arvin Fletcher currently penciled in as starters. Behind them, mostly freshmen and junior college transfers. Maybe the unit will be talented enough to negate the lack of experience. But counting on that is a perilous notion.

Strength: Secondary

Southern Miss is loaded with both experience and talent both at cornerback and safety. Cornell Armstrong and Curtis Mikell will likely start at corner, while Tarvarius Moore and Jomez Applewhite appear locked in at safety. Picasso Nelson Jr. and Kelsey Douglas are also interchangeable at the nickel spot. But even those youngsters that are a part of the fray (Demetrius Market, Rachuan Mitchell, JonTe’ Demby and Tyler Barnes, among others) have stood out during training camp.

Weakness: Linebacker

The Golden Eagle coaches went into the offseason a little uneasy about this position group. Senior Sherrod Ruff and junior Jeremy Sangster were really the only proven entities the staff had (aside from senior Evan Osborne, who has since left the team). But guys like Walden Davis and Racheem Boothe have emerged as quality options at linebacker. Nevertheless, overall depth is a concern given redshirt freshman T.J. McGinnis and true freshman Santrell Latham are currently running with the third team, and McGinnis was a receiver at this time last year.

Strength:   Ease with which Kentucky brown fire water can be transported into The Rock.

Weakness:   The time it takes to stand in line at The Rock concession stands to get the large soft drink to add the Kentucky brown fire water to.
