UTSA box score

utsa.png

A few things stand out.

We continue to struggle with time of possession, even in a game where we ran for a lot of yardage.

The penalty problem seems to be getting addressed. The turnover problem is not.

10.1 yards per pass and 8.2 yards per rush, against a team that was thought to be among the best in CUSA, are impressive. There is a lot of potential on this team that isn't being fully realized.

They made more first downs than us; it was a 3:2 ratio, in fact. I think this reflects the fact that we're an explosive team, but not an efficient team capable of sustained drives.

Similarly, we sucked on 3rd down.

Also, it's not evident above, but it looks like ESPN is using the NFL passing efficiency formula for college QBs now. That's a welcome change. The NCAA efficiency formula is pretty obscure. Most fans don't really know what's good / bad according to that formula.

I am amazed by this win.

Coaching is still horrible.

Great win by the team.

Re: UTSA box score

Seems like even way back when we were good we had a way of winning with poor stats.

When you know how to win you do that. Maybe we're learning.

@JaredUTSA: I often talk smack about USM's coaching staff so I must declare that they heavily outcoached UTSA today

Not so sure about that. I didn't get the sense that their team was particularly big, nor were they particularly fast. You can only coach up a team so much. A big talent differential can't always be overcome, even by fantastic coaches.

Re: UTSA box score

It was a hard game to watch but I'll give our guys credit for pulling it out.  UTSA was number 2 in the FBS in yardage allowed going into the game.  They had only been giving up 207 yards per game total and we more than doubled that.

Re: UTSA box score

"was thought to be"- by idiots, apparently. I said it elsewhere: they looked small and slow to me. It's sad that anyone would mistake that team for good. We dicked around for 3.5 quarters and still beat them, and it's not because we've got the next Bill Parcells on staff.
