Hopson reaches a fork in the road

I think this is a pretty important games when it comes to defining Jay Hopson's time at USM. I suspected the game will reveal Hopson to be mediocre and beyond redemption. He's a streaky coach who'll pull off an occasional upset but will also lose some games he should have won, hovering around .500 most of the time.

If things turn out better than expected, though, it becomes a bit more difficult to write off Hopson. A win tonight would put the team at 5-2 this season and 7-2 in its last nine games, including a bowl game win, two wins over favored Tech teams, and the UTSA upset. There aren't any big-name programs in that stretch of games, but maybe six or seven of those opponents did have their shit at least somewhat together.

The importance of this game to Hopson in particular is exactly why I think Tech beats us pretty easily. That said, if we win, I will have to tip my fedora* somewhat begrudgingly in Hopson's direction.

Maybe he's old enough to pull it off, "it" being looking good in a fedora.

If you can't pull it off, take it off. If you don't know whether you can pull it off, take it off.

pretty fair assessment.  gotta give props if he wins this game.  he will have won/lost with his QB recruit. he has had enough time to "coach" him into "not" fumbling.   if he loses, he still kind of has the excuse of not having the best QB available to play today, though.  so def a good win if pulls it off but not a terrible loss  (unless gets beat down), if he doesn't.  you're right though.....a loss makes him mediocre, bc a legit good coach shouldn't lose this game.

No one on this board is on team Howard. You're pouring fuel on wet kindling.

Re: Hopson reaches a fork in the road

I mean, it is what it is. He's an average coach. He's also the lowest paid coach in this league and is doing better than last place, so you could say we're getting a bargain. This program isn't and won't ever be what it used to be (thanks Giannini) so while I don't think he's an elite coach, I'm still pretty pleased to be at 5-2. I really thought we'd be 4-3 or even 3-4 at this point before the year started.

You beat the auto brokers and Charlotte at home.......and a 1-6 Rice team on the road......and this team gets to 8 wins. Can’t make this stuff up......

That's why lazy-ass fucks like Giannini like CUSA: if your football coach is even slightly competent, you get "winning seasons" and "bowl games" ad nauseam. These things can become a distraction from what's really important, though.
