NMSU

They're flirting with bowl eligibility after a long, long drought.

NMSU is a team that I think should have received a C-USA bid instead of (at a minimum) FAU and FIU, or (more realistically) one of the Texas schools.

Why did they not get a bid? I believe it has to do with their relationship with UTEP, a C-USA school about 45 minutes south of NMSU, and with the relationship between El Paso and Las Cruces, NM.

Las Cruces likes to look down on El Paso, and NMSU looks down on UTEP. El Paso is Mexican, they say; Las Cruces is populated by the descendants of Spanish settlers. UTEP is a ghetto school that will admit anyone; NMSU is small, but more selective and better run... and so on.

So when UTEP gets a chance to stick it to NMSU, they go all out, and it's to all of our detriment.

All that said, I have no desire for USM to play in Las Cruces every other year. This whole commentary assumes that USM belongs in the eastern division more than it belongs in the western one.
