Who will run the offense in 2018?

Saw this morning that South Carolina fired their OC Kurt Roper who has been the OC previously at Duke and Florida. Also spent a few years at Tennessee and Ole Miss handling QB and running backs.
Would like to take a shot at Freeze for his first stop on his redemption tour. Mark Hudspeth could be another option as well. Hudspeth traditionally put up a ton of points at ULL and has experience recruiting our territory.

Define failure. If its simply wins and losses then Willie Taggert isn't getting 30 million from FSU and Chad Morris isn't getting 24 million from Arkansas. Sumlin failed at A&M, Bielma at Ark and Meachum at Kansas but if you could get any of those coaches for your staff you would.
You have a limited budget to begin with so the options for experienced coaches with recruiting relationships in the south won't be as deep otherwise go the Buckley route again and see if you can find a high school coach from Petal or maybe call JCJC directly and see if Steve is ready for another round.....

Freeze recruited extremely well at Ole Miss and in his "failed" last season still almost had 400 points of offense including 43 on Bama, 45 on UGA and 34 on FSU.

Hudspeths teams still scored almost 340 points per season over the last two seasons. Since we recruit against ULL for the same players from the same high schools we could leverage his experience and connections while putting up points.

Roper is a recruiting and experience play from the SEC. South Carolinas offensive numbers are not as impressive against the SEC defenses he plays so it would be a hire similar to Dawson but with more years experience in the SEC and one year of NFL experience(assuming the Browns are still considered a NFL team)

Im not saying this is the only list, just a few options that might be realistic as of today.

Kentuckys financial agreement with Dawson expires in June. We have been paying him 50K per season and Kentucky has been paying him 500K. Once the UK money runs out we either try to keep Dawson at a significant pay cut (our total Asst coaches pool is 800K) or he goes somewhere else for more cash. The top 10 assistants in CUSA average around 260K per season. Do you increase his base 200K to keep him or do you spend 200K -250K on another coordinator?

Re: Who will run the offense in 2018?

Correct, and good points, but as of now he's our OC. To my knowledge there have been no announcements otherwise.

That said, I hope we have a short list.

Re: Who will run the offense in 2018?

NGB - Freeze can't be on a list right now...his band of 5 star "bought and paid for" athletes made him look damn good.  And no, I didn't forget he did a good job at Arky State...but it was the Sun Belt.

Bailiff...meh.  The only reason I would want to see Bielema on our staff is so his wife could add to the Hot Chick on Campus category...meh, not worth it. What I'm really getting at is none of the guys you mention are going to want to come to USM for $135K/year to play second fiddle to Hopson.  It helps them zero in scoring another HC job.  Therefore, we are much better served looking for a young guy who will work his ass off recruiting and coaching as he attempts to make a big enough splash to catch on elsewhere.

I had forgotten that UK was paying him that much money. That does present a potential problem, but I don't think OC is the place to be pinching pennies. The coaching staff needs a strong offensive specialist and that's not Jay Hopson. OC needs to be strong.

Well. If USM had gone 0-12 and they fired the OC, Kentucky is still paying the guy.

It reads as if USM signed an agreement that includes Kentucky’s payment?

Could be. I'd always figured it was just a de facto thing.

However they set it up legally, though, it's drying up. Dawson may not be the next Mike Leach when it comes to coaching offense, but on balance I think he's probably as good as anyone else we're likely to find. And continuity is probably a good thing at this point.

So I hope we keep him. It's not like he's done anything that makes him a lead pipe cinch for a P5 coordinator job, nor has he done anything to rule that out.

A) we are in the Sun Belt.......it’s just spelled differently
2) we will pay our OC close to 200K, not $135K. Since the coaches I mentioned don’t have employment currently, they will answer a phone call in between Judge Judy and their local news.....
C) If they don’t screw it up they will get a better job in 1-2 years. With our schedule and returning talent next season, we “should” get to double digit wins. If you avg 32-35 points per game, you will have calls from the ECU’s, Tulanes, Nevada’s and Bowling Greens this time next season.

I see this a lot lately. You're selling USM short. Why would an OC who's succeeding that well at USM leave for Bowling Green, ECU, or Nevada? Those places aren't exactly Grand Central Station when it comes to the coaching profession.

I think a move to a P5 assistant coach job is much more likely. If you're coaching in the G5, and you're not a has-been (Tommy West, Rickey Bustle, etc.) then you've got your eyes on building a resume and getting to a truly higher level. USM is at least as good a place to do that as BGSU. Bouncing around to other, marginally better G5 schools doesn't strike me as a good career move.

Not selling USM short, just realistic when it comes to income. Making 200K in Hattiesburg vs one million in Greenville, NC is a big difference.
On a related point, I would love to know how pathetic our offer was to Chip Lindsay seeing that he recently interviewed with South Alabama.......

Oh, you're talking a move to a G5 head coach job then. Yeah, that's very plausible.

USM was fortunate to get a couple good years out of Chip while he was on that upward trajectory. I doubt they made much of an effort to keep him. That's not really USM's modus operandi.

Our current running backs coach [ former receiver coach ] MIGHT be a realistic possibility if Dawson leaves .

I'm not sure he has earned the 50k we have been paying him.

What is his market value?

Definitely 550k or even 1/3 of that.

It's hard to know. There have been games where the offense has looked good. There have been games where the offense has looked like shit. Everyone wonders how much Hopson meddled in things.

Chip Lindsey he is not, yet.
