36 Years Ago Yesterday

"Paul Bryant's last season as Alabama football coach saw a nine-game winning streak against Auburn and eleven-game winning streaks against Tennessee and LSU all come to an end. The loss to Southern Miss was Alabama's first loss in Tuscaloosa since 1963, breaking a 57-game win streak in Bryant–Denny Stadium. Coach Bryant retired after Alabama's bowl victory against Illinois and died less than one month later, on January 26, 1983."

"There was a great deal of character on that field today. They are for real, no doubt about it. This was no fluke." - Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant

Re: 36 Years Ago Yesterday

I'd forgotten that he died that quickly after he left coaching. Apparently he was a pretty heavy drinker, a smoker, and also carried some guilt over how he coached during his Texas A&M days. When asked about his retirement plans, he said something like, "I'll probably croak within a week" and it pretty much happened. Hope he's at peace. Practically, he did as much for USM football as a lot of "us" did.
