Shannon Dawson

I think he has done a good job and is a pretty fair play caller . Do we lose him next year due to not being able to pay his salary since the majority of it is paid for by Kentucky this year ? Does the new receivers coach fill that role if we lose him or do we look outside the program for a replacement ?

Re: Shannon Dawson

He's done a good enough job and I'd rather have him than not have him.

Re: Shannon Dawson

He'll take a position coach job at a P5 school and make 3-4x as much as we would pay him. I think Walden will replace him.

Re: Shannon Dawson

Dawson may have limited opportunity by season end. His offense hasn’t produced at the level required to collect attention.  As mentioned he’s good, at best in my opinion.  Will be interesting to see how deep in the pocket we go to keep him.

At the risk of being beat to death for this I must ask. Has Derrick Nix spent enough time under the direction of Huge Freeze to be an effective OC?   One would think he’s getting to the age and point in his career to either step-up or be a position coach rest of his life.

I think it takes a unique skill-set to be an offensive coordinator. I don't think its just a matter of tenure. That's why you see so many former QB's slide into the OC positions.

Good enough for what?

There have been games where if I could I would have tasered him for bad play calling.

USM is the right place at the right time for Dawson. Last year the team averaged about 33 points per game. This year we are around 30 points per game and that number should creep up more as the season progresses. Comparing to Blakes offense, he came in around 31 points per game year 1 and was at 31 points per game 7 games into year 2. Numbers don't lie and they are almost identical at this point when comparing the two coaches in their respective USM careers. Dawson has Ito doing well in his system for the past two seasons. QB play is horrid without question but if we get to 8-9 wins with what we have left on our schedule including the bowl game Dawson is going to be offered a better paying position at a bigger program. Considering all factors (new coach/staff in 2016, QB injured part of 2016, Keon's struggles last season/this season) not to mention his recruits are just getting inserted in year 2.....With Hops focus on defense and Dawsons offense averaging north of 30 a game we should have a great chance to win every game we play. Would like to see what Dawson can do in year 3 but we wont get that chance.

Re: Shannon Dawson

As far as Derrick Nix . I like him , but never been a coordinator . He is a good recruiter but nowhere near ready for an O.C. job in my opinion .

Re: Shannon Dawson

Dawson is paid $550k/year through 2018. UK still pays the lions share of that annual salary. Hopson's base salary was 500k when he accepted the job. I don't know what he has realized with performance bonuses or if his base has changed since he took the job.

Based on this info, I'd say we have a good chance of keeping Dawson through 2018, especially since we aren't turning a lot of heads scoring 30 points/game vs C-USA defenses.

For the record, Willie Simmons makes $275k as head coach at Prairie View. I don't think a C-USA coordinator position is a big step up. He can stay where he is and hold out for a HC position.

Re: Shannon Dawson

Simmons would be a great candidate for an HC job in SUNWACUSA after another good year at PV.  Don't see why he would move up as a coordinator unless its to a P5 team offering $500K/year or more.  It was some what of a risk for him to even move down from OC at MTSU to be a HC at a SWAC school...if it was by choice.
