Figure it out

Let me give you a counterargument.

When I use that site, I'm damn sure not trying to click his ads. A click on an ad is worth just under a dollar to me. It's worth at least that to him.

I managed to accidentally click one of his banner ads twice today while trying to click a link in the breadcrumb list, or maybe the name of a "user online now."

Am I using a pretty narrow display and an oddball browser? Yeah; at this point I pretty much have to resort to oddball hardware just to sneak in.

Will I eventually figure out how to dodge his invisible ad minefield? Sure, but only after making him enough money to stuff his face a couple of times at Burger King or wherever neckbeards eat.

It's not just an annoyance; every site has its annoyances. It's a cheat. People try to click on a simple link, but end up clicking on an ad they can't even see yet, and young Jeremy pockets a dollar or two.

This is not cool at all in my book. He's Mister Southeast Linux Group and all? He needs to fucking fix this, or it will keep getting reported. Put down the Sheraton ballroom microphone, Jeremy, and do some real damned work.

Just typifies the sort of right place / right time idiot that unfortunately sometimes succeeds in this game.

I don't disagree....was simply pointing out it's a pagination sizing issue and I really don't care helping to fix other than pointing out the 'why'.....

I've given him shite too in pm land....

however, you guys simply take it all too personally IMO.....I don't give two shites if he scoops up his fodder out of his arse......there's a number of people I like over there.....and it took time to develop those relationships....

I promise you........that dipshite has zero influence on nuts zongo....

That's definitely true. It happens when the viewport is relatively narrow (and you're not using Tapatalk or whatever to deal with it). If you maximize the browser window, use zoom values close to 100%, etc., it probably won't affect you.

dipshite asked me to send him a screenshot.....flat out told him to resize to 125%...maybe he's a linux guy and it reacts differently with various browser.....I have no clue these days....

I have no problem contributing pro bono......

I really wish you would sticky the suggestion thread.....I asked once before.....I won't ask again....

I guarantee you, I'll give you all kinds of ammo to work on if you find it valuable......

fwiw: ~14 yrs ago, I was tasked to develop a paperless system that was capable of disseminating 'info/revisions on the fly' to many a greene cty folk via a terminal vs. issuing a shiteload of shop drawings (custom mfg facility)

trust me when I tell ya.....that wasn't easy.....

I wasn't the coder (had one local and one in PDX)....I was the liason/platform designer whilst maintaining/standardizing three remote databases and local engineering standards.....

I easily don't miss all that bs of a headache.....

I've told you I would help ya.....just make it easier....simply sticky the existed or a new one and go from there....I don't do email anymore (fucking hated it then....sucks even more now)....you don't have PM capability....

your choice pal.....

I use Linux and I can tell you that the problem happens in any browser if you make the window narrow enough.

No need to ask, I'll do that shortly. That thread actually was sticky for a while, but I undid that at some point.

he also sends all of his traffic through viglink, which is just another way to molest his users.

The more I learn about it, the more I think Viglink is the absolute gutter. I really knew it a long time ago, before I even knew what it was called. Those links are never appreciated, and sites that do that are typically shit.

In my brief experiments with Viglink, I got the impression that Google (even though they own part of Viglink) penalizes sites that use it pretty heavily. I saw it in search results, and in ad revenue. Ad revenue was down at least 50% while Viglink was on, and the choppy, slow way Viglink reports its own payout makes it difficult to make an overall comparison.

Makes me wonder if anyone is even getting value out of this technology. Jeremy supposedly makes good money off of his little site. I guess that's more a relic of when he had his lucky little monopoly on the NCAABBS address than it is a result of anything he's doing right now.

last I heard, he doesn't have a job.  he lives with mommy and daddy, and that site is his only source of income.  ad impressions, much less as clicks, just don't pay off as well as everyone thinks.

I thought he was married, though. Does the whole family just sort of pile into dad's basement? I'm imagining a lot of discarded fast food wrappers, a very unfortunately-proportioned wench with acne, and a borderline feral toddler. It all sort of swirls around while a frustrated Jeremy struggles to remember how "float" works in CSS.

Hard to know where to even start with that.

For one thing, I have never seen anything that would indicate he's even trying to "calculate available space in real time and serve up a dynamic ad in real time."

I've been browsing that site for years, on all sorts of devices, and I've only seen one size/shape ad there. It will never be "best suited for the end user's browser and screen" because it never frickin' changes.

As for "running on a few test boards and only on thread listing pages," that's just not true. I have seen this problem on many, many pages. I strongly suspect that it's a potential issue on every page at CSNBBS.

Then he says he needs iOS screen shots. That's especially disingenuous. Reproducing this problem is trivial, and is possible on every browser/platform I've tested.

There's a lot of funny shit on that part of the board, really. There's one thread where someone suggests he use NodeBB instead of MyBB, and Jeremy responds with some crap about writing his own forum software instead, in "Google Go." That was in 2014, and he's still using MyBB.

Make an account here, Jeremy, and I'll tell you *exactly* where you can "Google Go," and it's not "to the polls."
