Re: Offseason baseball thread

No game in Pearl in 2018 vs State. As reported earlier this year, we'll play them Feb 16-18 in Hattiesburg.

Re: Offseason baseball thread

Southern Miss has announced its latest crop of baseball signees.

Seven of the 10 are pitchers — or, have experience on the mound. Suiting up for the Golden Eagles for the first time in 2019 will be right-hander Aubrey Gillentine (Amory) left-hander Josh Lewis (Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College), right-hander Gabe Shepard (Faith Academy), right-hander Tyler Stuart (Herscher, Illinois), Matt Manley (Central Hinds) and Brant Blaylock (Northwest Community College).

Right-hander Hunter Stanley (Meridian Community College) has not officially been announced but is expected to be part of this year's signing class.

The influx of pitchers will help bolster a Southern Miss pitching staff that expects to lose four (Colt Smith, Trent Driver, Keller Bradford and Cooper Jones) to graduation. There’s also a chance the Golden Eagles could see draft-eligible closer Nick Sandlin leave following the 2018 season.

Re: Offseason baseball thread

Scheduling update .... we were supposed to play Stony Brook at home the weekend of Feb. 23-25. But they canceled on us due to New York's travel ban to Mississippi. They were trying to get a deal going where they could commute in from Slidell (and not stay overnight in Hattiesburg) but they just couldn't work it out.  Only at Southern Miss can this shit happen.

So now we're looking for a weekend series in December. Not ideal. Since most teams are already booked, we likely will have to join a tournament. Unless Berry and Caillet work some magic to get a home series that weekend (which I imagine would be very difficult since nearly all teams have filled their schedule out), this means we'll have 3 less home games in 2018 than we were supposed to. TTT fans weep.

Re: Offseason baseball thread

Those stupid ass backwards fucks in NY will ban travel between the states but allow terrorists to freely move about and even give them benefits that were supposed to be reserved for tax paying US citizens.  Fuck them and everyone that agrees with that stupid shit.  Oh, and a joyous Sunday to all.  wink

Yep. To MS and NC.

Funny, we were supposed to play this same school to open 2014. But there was a blizzard on Long Island that week and they weren't able to fly down here. We ended up having to play at the McNeese/Lake Area Classic instead.

Re: Offseason baseball thread

Little tidbit from a press release today. Apparently the opening series vs State will be called the Mississippi Farm Bureau Classic. Farm Bureau better be paying us some $$$ for this shit.

http://www.southernmiss.com/sports/m-ba … 17aab.html

The Golden Eagles open the season Feb. 16, when they play in the Mississippi Farm Bureau Classic, hosting Mississippi State in a three-game set at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.

Re: Offseason baseball thread

Prior to one specific alumni moving up the ladder at Farm Bureau, they didn't sponsor us for shit.  They were tossing $$$ at those other schools.  He is still there in a good position and has other USM folks moving up the ladder with him.  The Bureau is now a very nice sponsor of USM athletics.  You can find him tailgating for football on the green under a rather large FB tent and then at game time in a FB suite.  As a FB member, I'm happy to know some of my premium dollars go back to USM.  (I need a Farm Bureau tot for this sappy shit yikes)

Re: Offseason baseball thread

Full top 40: http://baseballnews.com/collegiate-base … -12-19-17/

Couple thoughts on that poll. Just commenting on teams that I feel I know a little about.

- they have USM at #25 but I think they’re overrating us. Our offense should still be pretty good, but we lost a bunch of innings from 2017. Ostrander should be an improvement over Fed, but I still think it’s going to be a little bit of a struggle for us on the mound, especially with our weekend rotation.

- Ole Miss is very underrated in that poll. With that 2016 class now sophomores, I expect them to be a top 15-20 team.

- ULL is overrated in the poll. They had a pretty anemic offense in 2017 and they lost most of their run producers to graduation. Their rotation should be pretty good with Hogan Harris and Nick Lee, but Gunner Leger is going to be out all for at least half the year (possible that he just sits out the year and takes a redshirt).

- South Alabama is about right at #17. Typically 1 or 2 teams from the AAC/CUSA/Sun Belt will emerge as a host, and I think this is the team that could take them to the next level. Their offense is going to be one of the best in the nation (Swaggerty, Donovan, Hardy, Davis, etc.). If they get any pitching at all, they’re going to win a bunch of games. We’ll find out what they’re like early with the Coastal tournament then a 4-game series at Texas Tech.

- I can’t figure out Mississippi State. I sorta think they might be the reverse of their 2017 team (which was good offensively, but struggled on the mound because of injuries). Pilkington is awesome, and JP France should be a serviceable #2/Saturday starter. Self/Price are quality bullpen arms and they also get a bunch of guys back from TJ surgery. But if I’m a State fan, I worry about their offense without Rooker + Brown and Gridley. Mangum is really good, but he’s kind of a singles hitter. Not much a power threat which Rooker and Brown brought. I do expect them to kick our ass again opening weekend, because we have a mental block when we play them for whatever reason.

Doesn't look like we'll play in the UNO Tournament (which I thought was a possibility with our scheduling issues that same weekend). They released their schedule. However, we will play them in 2 midweekers. 2/27 on the Lakefront and 5/15 on 4th Street.

Re: Offseason baseball thread

We're going to get swept, but opening weekend will probably be the best atmosphere at PTP ever.
