Liberty Bowl

Memphis is the G5 half of this matchup and so far they look the part. They have no pass rush.

Iowa State's QB is pretty erratic. Otherwise this one wouldn't still be close (14-7 Iowa State).

Re: Liberty Bowl

That was the worst field goal attempt I've ever seen (outside of the Bayou Classic) by Iowa State.

I've never seen that stadium so full. Standing room only.

Yeah, it really was full. Memphis lost today but they've come a long way.

Re: Liberty Bowl

They only had about 1,300 more people in attendance compared to our Urban Meyer game in 2003. I was at the game. It was about 10 degrees colder compared to today’s weather. I also still have my Liberty Bowl sweatshirt from that game that properly spelled my schools name....can’t believe we didn’t score a single point that day.....
Didn’t realize that this was the first time Memphis has played in this bowl game.

I was at that one, too. The stadium was very full that day.

Wasn't that the game Almond Joy kicked a Mormon in the head?

Almond may end up regretting that. Supposedly good Mormons eventually get to be gods of their own planet.

Re: Liberty Bowl

I too was at that game...the one that should have been a key indicator to any USM fan of Bower's inability to win a "big" game.  It was there that I realized we were fucked until he was gone.

Re: Liberty Bowl

I've had a whole lot of time to calm down over the whole late Bower debacle, and I just don't think he every recruited a really good QB.

Lee Roberts was kind of a dark horse candidate who turned out good, when surrounded by a lot of talent. Beyond that Bower was always just scrambling for someone, anyone to play the QB position.

Almond played hard. Maybe Jeff Kelly was just as good in his own way. But for a guy who played QB, coaching at a university that's put some damned good QBs onto the field, where were Bower's star QB recruits?

It really kind of confuses me. As soon as Bower left, Fedora found Austin Davis and he's in the NFL. After that, Monken found Nick Mullens and Kyle Sloter who are in the NFL.

WTF was Bower even thinking at the QB position?

I think Davis was a Bower recruit if I am not mistaken.

Re: Liberty Bowl

Yep. So were many of Fedoras recruits including the big wide receiver from ocean springs. Bower was trying to get him into gulf park instead of Junior College. The statements Bower was not recruiting him were wrong. I asked Jeff about that years ago. Write whatever you want to the contrary. Fedora went after his own recruits which included the list Bower gave him. Why would he not?

The one recruit that Ricky Bustle gave us was Kyle Sloter...he loved the kid.  Monken thought him better at TE and went the "daddy ball" route with Mullens.  Not that it wasn't a bad idea but he didn't give Sloter a chance.

Re: Liberty Bowl

And I'm not necessarily faulting Jeff Bower. Recruiting is something you do in an environment you can't control. I'm just kind of surprised at how thin those teams were at QB. I guess the lack of continuity at OC didn't help.

Re: Liberty Bowl

I think Damien Carter was Bowers last shot at a legit QB to run his offense.....he ended up being a wide receiver when they closed the book on his qb career. Jeff Kelly was a good one for Bower who made the NFL with the Seahawks for a couple of years before he got bumped by that Cyclone Senaca Wallace.

I've whined about Kelly as much as just about anyone. Again, there's been a lot of time for the dust to settle, and I think he just wasn't very well-suited to what the college game was turning into.

Yes.  Cable Davis was brought in by Bower.
