Could be wrong but thought AD was to be walk on, decided to play baseball instead, and was begged back to football by LF.

That's true. Davis didn't get any I-A football scholarship offers.

I don't really know how much cross-pollination with baseball led to him coming here on a baseball scholarship.

If that was an example of Fedora being clever and not wasting a scholarship on a guy who had other means of financing his tuition, then that's good. If it was an example of Fedora denying Davis a scholarship because he didn't think he deserved one, that's bad.

Re: Liberty Bowl

Austin Davis was a redshirt on the roster under Bower in 2007. Fedora did not recruit him to Southern Miss. He might have kept from quitting football for baseball but regardless, Austin came to Southern Miss under Coach Bower.

Makes sense if you think about the timeline. Unless he came in as a walk-on and immediately started four years at QB, he had to have had a redshirt year, and that would have had to be under Bower in 2007.

Makes the most sense of all the versions I have heard.

I too was at that game...the one that should have been a key indicator to any USM fan of Bower's inability to win a "big" game.  It was there that I realized we were fucked until he was gone.

I would like to nominate that season opener at Cal as the Bower Fire alarm......two points....good lawd....

could be a good thread by itself.... i nominate

1993 lost to Pitt at home on thursday night
2000 lost to loserville 28-49 at home
2004 lost to cinci 24-52 at home

1998 Humanitarian bowl
2002 Houston bowl
2003 Liberty bowl

Re: Liberty Bowl

I thought the team played pretty well against OK State in 2002. They were just outmatched.

i seem to recall that bower gave up and punted in the 4th quarter when we still had a chance.  i could be wrong.
