Would you like the Lottery in Ms?

Seems to be gaining ground as to get voted on.

No Poll?

15-20 years too late.  Yes for me.

You can't make a compelling argument against it?

Re: Would you like the Lottery in Ms?

I’ve never bought a ticket and figure that’s added about $35K to my savings had I spent $5 a week.

Re: Would you like the Lottery in Ms?

Poor people buy lottery tickets with money that would otherwise go to basic needs, like food and healthcare.
They're the ones that are going to be targeted by the government. With Mississippi being the poorest state in the country with a median household income hovering around 40k per year it would not be wise to introduce another vice to the state.

Introduce?

The tickets are being bought NOW.  The only difference will be that MS gets the $ instead of the surrounding states (sans AL).

Re: Would you like the Lottery in Ms?

I don't live in Mississippi anymore, but I do live in the lottery-crazy state of Georgia and I think having a lottery is a real drag.

Even if nice neighborhoods, convenience stores are clogged up with scratch-off zombies. They take forever in line, explaining all the convoluted bets and purchases they want to make. Then they scratch all their cards without leaving the store, so they can "reinvest" their winnings in more scratch-offs.

I have yet to see one of these scratch-off zombies win enough that they took their winnings home. I'm sure it happens- there is such a thing as a winning ticket- but I have never witnessed it. At best, they leave with their pockets stuffed with more scratch-offs because they have somewhere to go (e.g. to visit their probation officers).

You have to also consider that the lottery is a sort of voluntary tax, which sounds good, but its impact on the poor and ignorant is very disproportionate. The scratch-off zombies aren't the college-educated professional class.

To get the professional class's money, the government has to raise property and income taxes. In a "red" state that's hard to do, but it's better than having a lottery.

On top of all of that, Mississippi has a thriving casino industry. It actually provides a lot of jobs that pay enough to eke out a less-than-miserable existence. Why would people want to mess with that?

The people who want to play it will play it. I've only played a few times and I've never bought a scratcher.  But I see the stream of cars coming into La from Ms when it is a high jackpot. And that is the thrust of the talk Now. To keep that money in Ms instead of going into another state.

Re: Would you like the Lottery in Ms?

I guess I prefer MS to spend time, money and resources on figuring out how they just lost 4000 jobs this week to Huntsville, AL so they can create more jobs and get out of last place in the union.

Lottery and Casinos are mutually exclusive.  Not going to link anything because I'm lazy.

Yes, the lottery is a poor tax.

A bigger poor tax is driving umpteen hundred miles a year to pay your tax to another state.

Keep the money here.  It is being spent anyway.

Must be nice buying the 24 ounce Icehouse after work instead of the 16 ounce Milwaukee's Best. Got to make sure your monocle and tophat don't get dirty though.
