Football: New DC

Last year's safeties coach, Tim Billings, will move into the defensive coordinator role.

Biggest job Billings has had in his long career seems to be Co-DC of a pretty decent 2011 Wake Forest team.

Spay and neuter those pets, people.

Staff will also add DL coach Chris Boone, who was most recently DC at Murray State.

In the Hattiesburg American, Billings is described as DC and Nicholson as Co-DC... which doesn't make much sense. They pretty much have to both be Co-DC if one of them is, right? So either the paper doesn't understand what "co" means, or Hopson doesn't. Fingers crossed that it's the paper.

Title aside, my question is "who's calling the plays?". Is it Billings, Nicholson, or even Hopson? Or have they not even really decided that?

99beers used the word "mess," and I am getting that impression.

Re: Football: New DC

I was listening to the jackwagons on the "Eagle Hour" yesterday and they said that they will be speaking with Patrick Magee today,3-22 about the search for a DC and whether or not we will have one for spring football.  This is supposed to be your "go-to" programo for all things involving Southern Miss athletics.  Of course, they also said that Marcelo Rodriguez would play into the QB battle as a true freshman now that his red-shirt year was over.

So there's some chance the current Billings / Nicholson arrangement won't last long? I guess that's good.

I took it as they didn't know that the position had been filled more than this set up won't last long.

That's depressing on multiple levels.

T Nix

The "Professor" Patty Magee did mention T Nix and also mentioned Kane Wommack as possible DC's.  I'm not sure what is going on, the HA says the position is filled but other "sources" say it isn't.  Typical TTT stuff.

Re: Football: New DC

Sounds like it's very possible we kick off the 2018 football season with different people in both coordinator jobs from right now.

Is there any news on the OC job or do Hopson and McGilbannini just have their heads in the sand on that issue?

Patrick said that Hop is a defensive man and the defense will be what he wants, how he wants, regardless of who the DC ends up being.  Looks more and more like it's going to end up being a full blown shit-show.  Don't know if Koenning or Dawson will be running the offense next fall.

Re: Football: New DC

Surprised Vic Koenning hasn't been mentioned. Did anyone in the media even ask if he was considered or does their knowledge only allow them to bring up people from the past like Nix or Wommack?
