Offseason To Do List

Keeping it simple. End of academic year evaluation should identify key initiatives for fall of 2018.

1) Create a fund for AD buyout on Feb. 28, 2019(700K). Have deal in place for the hiring of Jeremy McClain and the return of Brent Jones commencing March 1, 2019.

2) Hire Hugh Freeze this summer in an advisory role to the Athletic Department with understanding he is the coach in waiting. Once we fail to qualify for the CUSA Championship game this fall, we begin transition to Freeze and building his staff. Hopson buyout will have one year remaining 12.31.2019 at $500K.

3) Do not extend Scott Berry. Remember when Lucky Charm extended Berrys contract at the end of his fourth straight season of missing the post season? Yeah, what an unbelievable move.....well, do not extend him again. It will work itself out.....

4) Create a committee to explore our options outside of CUSA at the end of 2018 season. Look at creating a new regional conference, joining the Sun Belt or going independent.

5) Enhance our non conference schedules. Agree to two road games, no returns with UGA, Fla, Penn St, GT, Fla St, Texas, TT, Texas AM, etc.....Remember the teams we played consistently in the 90's? Yes, get them back on our schedule. We need recruiting bait and this helps recruiting more than selling seats in the Rock.

This university needs to start looking out for itself and not let those only with self interests of simply "maintaining" lead us anymore. We have been an easy target for inflated paychecks with no accountability (Gilbert) and that needs to end now. Once we start having elevated expectations beyond competing in CUSA and begin taking calculated risks then we become something more.

Very well thought out and aggressive plan to bring USM back to some sense of prominence.

None of it will happen.

The mini Hitler power brokers in the area have what they want now.  They have NO desire for USM to advance and diminish their power and EVERY administrator we have hired can't wait to kneel down and start blowing.

You should join the PBEC. They even have the athletic department talking to them now.

Then we need new money options. Toyota recently announced it is investing another $170 million in Mississippi. Sell them naming rights to all sports venues including Tobys new Taco Stand coming in 2021. CSU just sold their stadium naming rights for the next 15 years for $38 million. Start talking to Toyota, or Nissan, Choctaw, Farm Bureau, etc.... All of these companies have advertising budget dollars and investments in MS. We have plenty of ways to create another $2 million in additional dollars annually with minimal effort. New money can replace old money quickly.

Re: Offseason To Do List

I really thought and hoped that Jeremy McClain would replace McG. Troy is moving in the right direction in everything they are doing. It was a mistake not to hire him..... Who knows, maybe he had no interest after working here and seeing the writing on the wall.

I almost completely agree.

There's no need to buy out Gilbert. Just ignore him. The dude's shooting blanks and everyone knows it. Frickin' Rodney's got more going on upstairs than Gilbert. Things haven't reached the point where Rodney sees athletics as the #1 fire that needs his attention, but when that happens, he'll do a marginally better job than Gilbert has. Think "passenger who has to fly the jet with help from the control tower" vs. "kamikaze pilot."

USM is a natural independent. Unlike CUSA, that's not a bad club to be in.

You could hand Gilbert a fuckin gold bar right now and he wouldn't have a clue how to convert it to cash...not even in the middle of the mall with three kiosks full of derka-derkas nearby!  He doesn't want to be told anything.  Trust me.
