Sun-Herald on the USM QB situation

With Howard set to transfer elsewhere, Dawson believes the Golden Eagles are still in good shape at quarterback.

"I don’t think it will impact us much,” Dawson said. “We’re going to play with the guys we have regardless. People make decisions for what they think is the best for them. I love Keon to death and I told him that. He felt like his best chance to play was for him to go somewhere else. I wanted him to stay obviously, but I understand why he didn’t.”

Would much rather have seen that XXX is our QB.  We are ready to go.

Keon ain't a D1 QB.  Never was.  Never will be.  That has been painfully obvious during his tenure.

Griggs shows signs, but in the end, he isn't either.

Can one of the others do it?  I don't know.  But you have to try them because you know the first 2 can't.

Why? None of them will effect camping season.

We won't know about Griggs until the week before JSU. His injury and lack of reps may keep him sidelined.

I thought Griggs was pretty good except for the fragility. At least one person said he's not a D-1 quarterback. Maybe so, I'm not a scout and I don't know what Dawson would do differently if he had a truly great QB. But Griggs does make better decisions than a lot of the guys we've been subjected to.

there's no question the playbook was more wide open when he was healthy......KH couldn't run more that 10 plays.....he was battery boy II.....

let's wait to see if KG can avoid injury this year.....he's got the chops....

Re: Sun-Herald on the USM QB situation

Griggs was smart enough to throw AT Korey whenever he could.  They grew up together so it was a natural fit but Korey bailed him and Keon both out of some bad stuff.  With that said, Griggs did do a better job of protecting the ball than Keon but there were times he looked rather mediocre.  With a back like Ito, Griggs should not have been put in some of the situations he was put in by way of play calling but often times its hard to tell exactly what Dawson wanted to happen versus what actually happened.

If Griggs is to start on 9/1, he's going to need all of fall practice to prepare.  I can't imagine that Jack hasn't been spending every waking moment getting ready for the season with this opportunity in front of him.

Re: Sun-Herald on the USM QB situation

Is it fair to say we beat UK and UT last year with a healthy Griggs?

Split, but "a healthy Griggs" is a unicorn. Here's to Unicorns.

I just remember Griggs coming in during garbage time against UT and going like 80+ yards in a few short minutes.......and I remember my former boss who was the UK Alumni President saying that kid would have beat UK if he played the entire game. Flip side maybe we don’t beat La Tech or The Alamo if Griggs played I guess.....
