Mark Richt retires

Can't say I'm surprised. Richt has always marched to the beat of a different clarinet.

Re: Mark Richt retires

After the Miami AD’s comments after their bowl game it was an easy move for him.

And Houston officially fired Applewhite today....getting interesting.....

Re: Mark Richt retires

NCAA needs to change their rules for early signing period or just get rid of it. If kids sign with a team in December only to have their coach quit or get canned before the February signing day they should be ]able to withdraw their early signing period commitment. Stuff like today will just kill early signing day unless they give recruits more protection.

I heard Matt Chernoff saying recently that the "early" signing day is basically the main signing day now and will morph into being the only signing day at some point. Recruits know that so many slots get used up on the December signing day that they're rolling the dice by waiting, and can end up losing out on a top-tier scholarship if they don't sign early.

While this has been unfolding, the NCAA has also been moving toward a softer stance on penalizing transfers. It's not much of a leap from where we are now to what you're proposing.

That said, I really dislike the notion that a coach leaving, or the NCAA announcing sanctions, or some dumbass in the crowd yelling insults, etc. ought to relieve student-athletes of their obligations. Once you start down that road, you're on a collision course with full-on free agency, and that's never helped any sport.

Re: Mark Richt retires

College football is a business. As long as National Signing Day is still in play they can write a rule that if the head ball coach quits or is fired before February and you commit in December, you can decommitt without penalty. As you stated it’s a gamble now for a recruit to wait until February so that plays into a Miami recruits decision if they want to pull the plug and hope FSU or UF has a spot available.

Re: Mark Richt retires

Another blow to the AAC. Miami steals Manny Diaz who was just hired by Temple like 3 weeks ago. Bahahahahahaha.....
