The Coast before and after Katrina

To me, Gulfport/Biloxi in the 1990s was kind of a Garden of Eden. My first apartment was an efficiency situated right at the end of the main Keesler AFB runway, right in the middle of the trashy part of Biloxi- 1664 Beach Boulevard. It cost $315 / month and it might as well have been Midtown Manhattan to me.

At night I'd go to one of the 24-hour bars and try to pick up women: The Phoenix on Dedeaux Road, the Fire Dog, Jim Bob's, etcetera. When it came to bringing home lonely women, I was just trying to keep my batting average above .200.

Over the years, I settled down and explored the less-trashy aspects of the coast. I ate many meals at Trapani's, and at Vrazel's, and at The Chimneys.

I guess I didn't appreciate the little bubble we were living in. I don't think that scene even exists anymore. It offered the 24/7 bar scene of the French Quarter with none of the pretentiousness.

It is true that you don't know what you have until it's gone.

Reminds me of a song, or two, and USM.

Re: The Coast before and after Katrina

I remember when Beau Rivage opened late 90’s and USM hosted a sports weekend event there. Went to it with my wife.....even saw Lord of the Dance at the hotel that weekend. Felt like the coast was heading in the right direction......still waiting for that next step.....

"The Opportunity Church"

That even sounds like it could be some of the same people going there as when it was The Phoenix.

You don't get as many Home Run Derby pitches here as you did on EP, but you still do swat 'em hard when they show up.  big_smile

I went there the second or third day they were open and it was pretty mind-blowing to see what they'd built.

The coast was heading in the right direction, and I think it kept heading that way, but it also really bore the brunt of Katrina. It affects financing and shit. Nobody wants to "ensure" the next Treasure Bay.

It was either Lord of the dance or Sha Na Na at Isle of Capri and I already saw Bowser a few years earlier at the Valley Forge Music Fair......

Re: The Coast before and after Katrina

4 new casinos with hotels are on the table down here. A 1.2 Billion development on the President Broadwater beach site. With a 12,000 seat concert hall, golf course & renovated Marina there.
Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley bought the old margaritaville fish camp & plans are for it to be the KISS Rock & Brews Casino. One next to Harrahs on casino row & one next to Scarlett Pearl on North back bay... The amusement park & new hotel on the beach next to Margaritaville resort is in construction right now... Big Ferris wheel & a sky bar included... Downtown development underway with The Barqs building being turned into condos & various bars & restaurants popping up on the newly bricked Howard ave.. Lots of other shit proposed...

Re: The Coast before and after Katrina

The 2nd phase of the restaurant row beach boardwalk is complete...goes from treasure bay to vets Blvd...very nice & used regularly by walkers. Joggers & bicyclists...they may extend it down to the amusement park in phase 3.

Re: The Coast before and after Katrina

We have a Rock and Brews here and it’s decent. The outdoor patio is really built as a biker bar. That 12000 seat music venue will come in handy once The Outfield starts touring again. Not sure if it can hold a Pet Shop Boys reunion.

Why is every city building a Ferris wheel?
