Who was USM's last competent leader?

Have we ever had one? Can't remember one since I've been a fan.

Thames had his critics and justifiably so, but I could make a case that he wasn't brazenly incompetent.

Aubrey Lucas was a great ambassador for the university, one of the best examples of a true gentleman I've ever met, and has quite a legacy.

He isn't the most charismatic leader, and he's not much of a sports guy. But he earned my respect and carried himself with great dignity as president.

Correct.  Shelby stirred some shit up that needed to be stirred, and he didn't care who he stomped on.  We always had a short conversation after each game due to a few of us beating on the Plexiglas windows where he watched games.  He really didn't mind.   Still say the loss of Ho Phlegm to Mercer was a big one.

The dude who wanted to make faculty punch a time clock and submit to drug tests? Yeah, he was clueless. No academic who's worth a damn is going to submit to a corporate-style work environment like that. Thames' bullshit pissed off so many people that our USNWR ranking still hasn't recovered.

Fleming was good, but the good ol' boys ran him off so they could install Thames.

Heaven forbid someone suggest accountability at 13th Grade University.

The guy we lost accreditation under? Yeah, he was great. State and OM fans still talk about that shit.

I make no comment about whether it's fair or not, but academics just aren't expected to do the things Thames wanted them to do. If Shelby wants to be the boss of a business, I'm sure there are any number of paint factories that would have him. He could blow the whistle himself every morning.

The larger issue is that Shelby apparently had a bone to pick with a big part of his own faculty.

Re: Who was USM's last competent leader?

Academics need to get their ass up and go to work like anyone else drawing a check . Too many of them are a bunch of whiny@@^&* . That has changed since I went to school there as most of my professors worked hard and cared about their students and did not seem to mind being held accountable .

Re: Who was USM's last competent leader?

None of the ones mentioned so far really gave a fuck about sports and/or if they really did, there was no understanding of the importance of having a GD plan for moving us forward.  Fleming, Lucas, Thames, etc all sat on their hands and watched with mouths agape as we were passed by.  Now we lose to Troy, Charlotte, UNT, and the like.

Most of the professors I have had do care about the students. Some (not all) of them don't give a shit about the university, which is fine, so long as they aren't yelling "Roll Tide!" in front of the class. A lot of our faculty will stay in Hattiesburg for 3-4 years then move on to some bigger university. Similar to Monken or Fedora in football.

yeah, he fk'd one for another.....

losing the usm golf course in all that bs was the icing on the cake....

regardless, the poly dept. is one of the best in the country now......I have to give Thames a pat on the back for that.....that (all forms of engineering) is the future.....

Re: Who was USM's last competent leader?

Haven't been down that road in many years.  So just wondering, can the golf course be restored on the previous land ??  Can't play at the game any longer due to eye problem, but I miss that course........especially playing with a Sunday morning hangover.
