Rank these coaches

..... in terms of a) accomplishments at USM and b) actual Xs and Os. Bower, Fedora, Johnson, Monken, and Hopson.

Accomplishments: 1) Bower, 2) Fedora, 3) Monken, 4) Hopson, 5) Johnson
Xs and Os: 1) Monken, 2) Fedora, 3) Bower, 4) Hopson, 5) Johnson

Re: Rank these coaches

I'd suggest one small change:

Accomplishments: 1) Bower, 2) Fedora, 3) Monken, 4) Hopson, 5) Johnson
Xs and Os: 1) Monken, 2) Fedora, 3) Hopson, 4) Bower, 5) Johnson

I don't know how involved Bower was with designing the offense, but it always struck me as incredibly unimaginative when he was the head coach. We only did well on offense in years when we had significant talent advantages (1997 and 1999). Go back and watch the 1997 Liberty Bowl highlights, for example. Those WRs were big and fast.

Re: Rank these coaches

Bower was notorious for interfering with the OC doing his job. Look at how many good ones left here.

How much Bower actually accomplished is debatable. Pre-2000, he was as good of a coach as we could have wanted. Post-2000, he was a guy who pulled off just enough exciting upsets (TCU in 2003, Bama in 2000, Nebraska in 2004) to keep his job. I can't recall one season from 2000 until Bower got canned that wasn't, in the final analysis, depressing as hell.

2004 in particular was a real head-scratcher. Beat Nebraska at their place, only to lose to Memphis and get skull-dragged at home by Cincy. Top it all off with a masturbatory bowl victory over North Texas, and you've got a casserole of nonsense that's pure TTT. It should have gotten Bower fired. Had we done that, we'd likely be in the AAC right now.

I don't even blame the dude. HCs don't have a long shelf life, even good ones. Look at Mark Richt, for example, or Jeff Tedford.

Re: Rank these coaches

Looking bad, the Fedora years weren't that bad. Like most USM coaches, I couldn't stand the guy when he was here, but that era was infinitely better than the shitshow that is CUSA 3.0. However, I think all 4 of his teams here underachieved. He was bringing in mid-low level P5 talent. Can't remember where I read this but I seem to remember seeing that we had the best talent by far out of all the non-AQs. I'll give him a pass in 2008 because of the new system. But there was no excuse for him not to win 9-10 games in 2009 and 2010 and go undefeated in 2011. Getting owned by UAB and Neil Calloway on a regular basis just isn't acceptable.

Fedora performed against BCS teams with a winning record and so did Hop so far. Fedora had us ranked well with an over-achieving team but as mentioned getting owned by UAB was bullshit.  Monken truly inherited a GD trainwreck and performed in the end.  Hop had crazy swings but beat a good UK team on the road in impressive fashion. Bower was 0-35!  Fuck Johnson.

Monken proved himself a very competent head coach and then promptly decided he wanted no part of that particular hell LOL. It was fun to watch... at the end.

He's not the only one. Supposedly Bower made his own attempt, but the charms of Laramie, WY were lost upon John Thompson, etc.

Re: Rank these coaches

I actually think Bower was as good a coach as anyone in the $EC at that time and would have outperformed many of them with those resources.  But trying to coach at USM as if tho he were at Auburn or L$U was just dumb.  He wasn't much different than Stallings or Dye or Dooley or Fulmer.  Better than many of the others that came and went. Was not Spurrier (Florida version) by any means.

WY would have been instant career death.

Agree with all of that... the Pat Tie mentality was there.

Re: Rank these coaches

Pretty high on the "accomplishments" list, but near the bottom of the other list. I was sad to see him go. (Accurately) predicted it wouldn't turn out well, which earned me a fair amount of derision, and was then pleasantly surprised that Bower turned out OK.

Re: Rank these coaches

A Halman innovation:

"On defense, the Golden Eagles are at the deepest they’ve been in quite some time. Defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro believes he has a 10-man rotation on the defensive line and the secondary should be one of the best in Conference USA."
