Wonder if we've got a shot at "others receiving votes" if we win out.

Currently #79.  Wins over #58 Marshall and another solid middle third team in the MEH Bowl...will not be enough to move 50 places up.

3rd place SUNWACUSA and Texas 4A state runner up doesn't merit votes? The Hell you say.

How is Marshall 21 spots ahead of USM? I looked at their schedule. They've made it to 7 wins in thoroughly unimpressive fashion. So has USM. There's really nothing either team has done to warrant being much higher than the other.

Marshall has lost to better teams. So there.

I'm not sure there's a strong enough argument there to justify 21 spots, though.

USM lost to UNT, UAB, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Those four teams have 26 wins among them (6.5 per) and two of them are in the SEC.

Marshall lost to NC State, FIU, FAU, and UTSA. Those four teams have 27 wins among them (6.75 per). There's one ACC team there and 3 CUSA teams.

Won/loss doesn't tell the whole story, I admit, nor does conference affiliation. Tennessee is a bad football team and they beat us.

Isn't this supposed to be rivalry weekend or some such nonsense ?  We don't have a rival. They tell us it's supposed to be LaTech. That didn't draw flies, so I guess we'll try Marshall now. I'll tune in if I can figure out what internet/smart phone app it's on, but it's hard to think of a more boring, irrelevant football game for the average fan than this one in front of 8500 in Huntington WV.

Well, you're using the poll to explain the poll, but I guess it's arguably no better/worse than any other ranking system and it does get at the rationale behind the rankings.

If Tennessee is really the 92nd best team in FBS, that does say something about USM.  Sagarin has Tennessee at 82 (which is 77 after you throw out FCS), and I think that's more reasonable.

FWIW, Sagarin has Marshall at 86 (80th in FBS) and USM at (get this) 108, right behind Samford.  That's 95th in FBS. So the gap is there, and it's not just in this one ranking. It's narrower in the Sagarin ranking than in this one, and I think Sagarin's ranking is a good one, but every knucklehead with a modem seems to think USM sucks.

Agree with all that. The nice thing is that USM and Marshall get to settle it on the field Saturday.  I think we would agree that if USM beats Marshall and the polls still have USM ranked lower, then that would stink.

that's what has always bothered me about USM football. last game of the season and every fucking team in the nation has an instate rival to play or a cross state rival and we always play whoever. just stupid. Louisville was the closest thing we had to a rival but I don't think we ever saved them for the last game. just another TTT in a long list of TTT.

Louisville plays Kentucky for rivalry week this year. It's not always that way, though. They play early in the season some years.

Maybe Louisville has progressed enough that UK's OK with admitting they're football rivals. Imagine that... "progress."

Re: CBS Festivus Ranking, Week 11

the only teams we could get as a last week rival game is La tech to the west and UAB to the east. maybe we could get Delta State as our instate rival game. or Belhaven.

We don't have rivals because the teams that would care to be rivals aren't worthy of us. Ought to be the same with conference affiliates.

How is Marshall 21 spots ahead of USM? I looked at their schedule. They've made it to 7 wins in thoroughly unimpressive fashion. So has USM. There's really nothing either team has done to warrant being much higher than the other.

Called it.

who the hell knows how the algorithm is structured.....

that's one they'll never publicly publish in "code".....the scrutiny would simply toss harpoons from 20 ft. as soon as that was made available....

btw, did you win a 12-pack on "called it"??? wink

Sagarin also ranked us much lower than Marshall.

I have an advantage over anyone using a formula, though. A formula predicts everything. I just called out one mistake.

I only make bets on shit I really understand, like MEAC women's bowling.
