Fort Worth paper with one of the best Briles to USM takes so far

https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/ar … 17190.html

"Sources said a job offer has not been made to Briles."

"Monday’s news of Briles being at Southern Miss smells of a program that is floating this out to measure the public’s reaction, or, more specifically, its anger."

"An interview with Southern Miss is the clearest indication to date that the ongoing NCAA investigation of Baylor’s football program, and Briles, is headed in such a way that the former head coach will not be penalized."

"Baylor president Linda Livingstone... said, 'If you look at the actual changes that have taken place on campus, the vast majority of them were not related to the athletic department.'"

"If USM wins, Briles will likely be offered a head coaching job after the ‘19 season. Whatever university will hire him will not have had to endure the PR hit that Southern Miss will."

"USM is a good spot for Briles, 63, to re-enter the major football coaching ranks. The school is located in a nice, quaint community, and the team plays in the non-Power 5 world of Conference USA."

"Sources said a pair of Texas Tech regents quietly inquired about hiring Briles after the school fired Kliff Kingsbury late last year. The reaction was no."

It would be a true Southern Miss ending to take this PR hit right now and end up getting turned down by Briles for a Sun Belt school later this week.....

And then lose Scotty Walden to another CUSA team next week......

Man, you took the words right out of my mouth with that second part. If this **** heads "south" we will all be telling tales about Mr. Walden for years to come.

UNT has a spot open and don’t believe Littrell when he says he will handle the play calling. He has a staff spot open and I guarantee teams are calling Walden right now.....

It almost seems like Walden stepped on the wrong toes or something. Yeah, he's young... it's not like he's 19 years old. What's the end game here?

Not sure about the end game but I do subscribe to the idea of Walden learning from Briles for one year if we hire him. Both know Texas recruitment and can be a powerful team together if it plays out.

Re: Fort Worth paper with one of the best Briles to USM takes so far

Briles departed with $15 million in severance because they had no cause to fire him, period. They were simply tossing chaff at a scandal.

Wish we had the courage, but I can't see a university that markets itself primarily to african americans and women hiring a man tainted by wispers of questionable concern over "claims" of abuse.

Coffee break is up, back on your heads.

We still suck bigtime.

If it's bad they're for it, if it's good they're against it - democrats!

Normally I would agree but look at where we are with this process right now. We have been dancing with Briles for at least a week, if not longer. Yesterday was the final formality in a hiring process, not the beginning. USM had already looked at his past, where he stands with the NCAA, probably spoke with his past AD now at Liberty, etc... before he was booked to visit Hattiesburg yesterday. Like I said previously, Paddy was used by USM to test the PR side of this. Outside of his name circulating back in the media cycle I don't see the push back fears that we were hoping to avoid. Make the hire and it all goes away by Friday because something else will take over the media by then....probably a trade in the NBA or something else.....

Based on two very interesting actions yesterday and this morning I believe we are offering Briles the job. One, Debbie Bower has posted twice on social media approving this hire.
The other one was Michelle Hopson. She had a two word response to Paddy McGeeks "Breaking News" tweet about the Briles interview. Calculated, methodical, and direct......all it said was "second chances"

I give USM credit for whoever is orchestrating this. The fact that this much work went into yesterday tells me the ball is now in Briles court.

At the very least.....we can say this......

Someone with authority cares about the football program right now which is more than I could say prior to yesterday.

Southern Sports Today is about to have Paddy on to talk Briles. He better be prepared because Chuck Oliver knows Southern Miss and has at least one connection working at USM. If Paddy does the generic crap again Chuck will call him out.

Re: Fort Worth paper with one of the best Briles to USM takes so far

Once again Paddy didn’t say anything. Chuck let him last all of 3 minutes. Chuck went on to talk about us for another 7 minutes after the interview. Good listen if you want to catch the podcast on southernsportstoday.com. Before he talked to Paddy he spoke of our history and Eloss. He actually called the last game of the Eloss era for CSS and talked about how Ellis hated every player on our roster that season. Good listen....minus the, “oh it’s about 50/50 if they hire Art” contribution from Paddy....
