Re: Gilbert Speaks

"Jay is a good football coach, but he’s a lot better person that a football coach. He’s a person of great integrity and high character. He leads the team when they’re going through practice, team meals and team meetings. He and the staff have a great rapport with the football team.

Those things are important."

Giblet is very confused.

"I don't think being in the 6th best conference is too bad."
"Look for Crickets Robertson to be one of the first 64 players chosen in the draft."
"Went to Starkville and came within one bad throw of taking the series."

Re: Gilbert Speaks

This dude's nuts-and-bolts efforts to fine-tune game day revenue are a distraction at best. He ought to have someone handling those mundane details for him. Besides that, he's trying to squeeze blood out a turnip. We have larger problems than the problems that can be solved by optimizing ticket prices.

He was responding specifically to the topic of fan attendance. His answer was about the gameday experience, which deperately needs attention, whether we have 15,000 or 30,000 at the games.
I also appreciate that he gives a nice plug for Coach Hopson's character & leadership. Sometimes an incoming AD won't say anything positive about incumbents.

That should be the first line of his job description. Followed by "get us out of C-USA".

the most amazing stat was we led the conference last year?.......

"The official figures do back up fans’ concerns. USM (5-2, 3-1 in Conference USA) has averaged 22,744 fans a game to rank fifth in C-USA in average home attendance after leading the conference with an average of 28,588 a year ago at 36,000-seat M.M. Roberts Stadium."

Re: Gilbert Speaks

He is a clueless buffoon.  He was hired 1/24, didn't show up for work for months.  When he got here, he stuck his head directly in the sand and it has remained there.  I expected no more from Bennett in this hire.

I don't believe that is true. He may have been hired and agreed to report at an agreed time in the future, but you make it sound like he simply didn't report for work for months.

If he negotiated a start date that was months away, that's lazy.

I really think hiring this guy was Bennett's biggest mistake so far.

He was hired on January 24. On that date, Hattiesburg American quoted Chad Driskell, USM's VP of External Affairs that "Gilbert is expected to begin work in Hattiesburg full-time probably the end of February or early March."

On March 3, The Sun Herald released the terms released the specifics of Gilbert's contract, including his contracted start date two days earlier:

On July 31, USA Today sports ran a feature commending our lazy AD for running early morning conditioning drills with the football team. Wind sprints photo shown here:

"Lazy" is probably not fair. I do see some stuff going on that strikes me as misguided.

Delaying his start date is something that might not sit well with some of Gilbert's staff. They know some hotshot is coming in, and his name is on the tip of every administrator's tongue. For two months, every statement is augmented something like, "well, we'll go ahead and do X, but once Gilbert gets here blah blah blah." Then when the dude shows up, he doesn't work any miracles or do anything special, he's just another new employee who has to be shown where the bathroom and the coffee maker are. The whole thing just sets up an "emperor has no clothes" scenario.

Running with the football team is nice, but it doesn't accomplish much for all the huffing and puffing.

Same with optimizing ticket price: it's provoked a whole lot of discussion, and it's made us look bad, for what? The "fourth highest revenue game since 2009?" That's weak, man.

Re: Gilbert Speaks

It always seems to come back to two big things:

1. Why aren't people attending home games?
Answer: It's the schedule. Not enough people want to show up to see C-USA teams. And once new weekend habits are formed, it's hard to get people to change.

2. How do we get out of C-USA?
Answer: We probably don't. That ship has sailed. You can put just about anyone in the AD position and end up in the same spot.

Re: Gilbert Speaks

So what are the current benefits of being in CrapUSA?

Scheduling:  Pro, much easier to put a schedule together.  Con, We end up with home games against Charlotte and UAB which NO ONE wants to watch.  Bottome line:  It hurst attendance.

Bowl tie ins:  Pro, none.  Con, crappy left over bowls.  Bottom line: We get stuck with little choice in shit bowls.

TV Money share:  Pro, None.  Con, a whopping $200,000 a year.  Bottom line:  Actually hurts more than it helps.

Recruiting:  Pro, Very little appeal with Cusa now.  Nothing to sell.  Con, We no longer hold any recruiting advantages over other cusa teams or sunbelt teams.  Bottom line:  Cusa has no appeal.  Nothing special playing for a CrapUSA team that isn't on TV, and goes to shitty  bowl games.

Money:  Pro, help somewhat.  Con, we can make gobs more being independent.  Bottom line:  Very little financial incentive to stay on cusa.

Other sports:  Pro, does help to have folks to play.  Con, no one cares about our other sports except baseball.  Bottom line:  Help with money losing sports but drags down basketball and baseball.

Student enrollment: Pro, none.  Con, we have seen a steady decline in enrollment since the better Cusa broke up.  Bottom line:  Students care more about the favorite SEC teams than usm.  There is no appeal to come to usm.

Please fill in the blanks........as I'm sure I have missed some stuff.

Re: Gilbert Speaks

Who is telling folks that going independent won't work, it's to hard, can't schedule, makes things difficult, no conference championship, blah blah.....

ALL EXCUSES for the lazy incompetent folks running this shit.  It's our own administration that kills the mention of the word.  Why.....because they don't want to work.

NOTHING GOOD EVER COMES EASY!

You will hear.....scheduling nightmare, can't get good teams, to hard to make work.  ALL bullshit.  You don't have to schedule Florida or Auburn at home to come up with a decent schedule folks would pay to see.  Hundreds of mid level P5 teams we can schedule home and home.  It would take some work, damn hard work, but you would be reassured that the salaries these folks are drawing is being earned.  Rather easy to make them accountable.  Any AAC teams, or mid to even bottom tier SEC teams will draw better than Charlotte if sold as a package.  Don't use the KY example, that was packaged with a shit schedule.  However a mix of Memphis, USF, Houston, Kentucky, Vandy, NC State, Duke, or reach out to Baylor, TCU, Tulsa.....BYU, Army, Navy, SMU, and even Tulane.  Mulltiple combinations.  Take the 2 or 3 whore games a year with Bama, FSU, Auburn, Ga.   Cut the home games to 5, and make an attractive package.  I assure you an 8-4 year playing a better schedule will lead to :  Better bowl choices, more TV, better recruiting, more fans, more money, better coaches, better game day experience,  and increased attendance.  Isn't that what it's about?
