I'm not going to fact check, but I think that would be a very short and distinguished list.

Fedora was bringing in 4 and 5 star players, which has never been done at Southern Miss in the Rivals/Scout era. Yeah, a lot of those guys didn't pan out but he was bringing in blue-chip talent. Hopson has brought in some decent players, but they aren't anywhere close to the guys Fedora had. Fedora's classes were ahead of a handful of P5/BCS schools. Now I will say that Hopson is a better recruiter than Monken, mainly because Monken hated recruiting and was more worried about Xs and Os.

Now in Hopson's defense, the program had not been totally destroyed by Giannini and Johnson yet when Fedora was here. We aren't considered as attractive of a program to recruits anymore. Also, USA, UTSA, and some of these other start-ups had not yet emerged when Fedora was head coach. But I'd still say that Fedora is/was the better recruiter.

Could be argued  with some success that Frank Wilson and Barney Farrow (sic) brought in the one five star you speak of.

Bring back Barney "Bags" Farrar.

Bring back Reed V. "Pie" TurkPalmer Eustachy.

It was brutal to witness Monken's learning curve but he learned.  A fourth year of Monk would have been nice to watch.

I don't think there was a learning curve. Monk just inherited a truly terrible situation. Even Saban or Meyer would have struggled. Remember that we were playing ~55 scholarship guys at points in 2013. Unheard of at the FBS level.

it's strange how some forget that part of the equation......

from the uab game in '12.....I easily signed more autographs than E12L that SEASON on that day!!!

Monk's hurdle was 8' tall going into '13......it's a shame he chose to leave after season 3.....

Stars aside, I still would not be ready to declare that list as better recruiting. With the exception of DB of course. And as pointed out a lot of FW and BF.

DeAndre Brown was really good for a year. Wasn't the same after he got hurt. He was also a distraction and a locker room cancer. Great talent though and teams had to respect him whenever he came on the field.

Freddie Parham was an average receiver. I'll never forget him returning back the kick against UVA in 2009 which sparked our 17-point comeback to beat the Hoos.

Khyri Thornton was a very solid DT for us, and was one of the few bright spots on those 2012 and 2013 teams. He was our Conerly finalist in 2013 and played a little while in the NFL. Certainly wouldn't call him a bust.

Kendrick Hardy came in immediately as a freshman and split carries with Desmond Johnson. Had close to 1000 yards from scrimmage his first year at USM. His carries in 2011 decreased once Jamal Woodyard entered the picture. It decreased even more in 2012 and 2013 with Jalen Richard coming in. I would not necessarily call him a bust, because he did contribute some, particularly early in his career.

Justin Jordan got suspended early in the 2009 season and never did shit.

Ben Schoenberger mainly just held kicks and played special teams in his 2 years at USM.

OC Brown didn't do anything. Redshirted in 2010 and was a backup in 2011. Transferred to Austin Peay once Fedora left.

Lamar Holmes was good. Started half of 2010 and all of 2011. Drafted by the Falcons and played a bit in the NFL. I remember when he caught a 2-point conversion (that was probably illegal) against UCF in 2011 that ended up making the difference in the game. We won that game by 1, IIRC.

Holy shit!  That was so much nicer than how I thought you would reply...I recall your disdain for DB.  What a waste that dude was.  I knew his step-dad (dude that raised him) and when I would ask how he was doing or how he was preparing, he would say, "he just smokes that shit and sits on the couch".  DBs parents were truly disgusted in his attitude and they are good people, not shit bags.  They are humble, hard working people. He is a shit bag!

Re: Fedora or Monken

monken.  by a lot.

fedora inherited a functional football program.  monken was thrown into a dumpster fire.

monken was also a better game manager;  even if the other team was ready for that fucking bubble screen, fedora was going to run it 12 times because his goddam game plan said he was going to run it 12 times, and that's all there is to it.  he never had a plan B if plan A went to shit.  or perhaps he was just too assured of his own mastery of the game to believe that he was being out coached.  one of the reasons that he wasn't a bigger success sooner was that he refused to believe that his DC was a hiring blunder.  fedora's biggest fan was fedora, to the point that it got in the way - a lot.

monken could adapt during the game.  quicker learner.  better motivator.  he also went out with his head up, instead of slinking out in the dead of night after a flaccid effort in the hawaii bowl.

fedhat loved himself more than the annual paycheck of Trump's hair stylist.....

and yeah, it took that dipshite 3 yrs before firing 'Bad'ford and hiring Disch....

once again, I'm fairly certain we lost 4 games scoring over 50 pts in those 3 years....

exactly.

I have several friends at work that went to UNC.  they suddenly appeared in my office when he defected to them, and wanted the skinny on LFed.  I said (among other things), "be prepared to score 50 points and lose.  often."

they laft.  then the season started.  they stopped laffing.

(I also asked them how important extra points were to them)
