2017 football: grade the coaching staff

Now that the books have been closed on 2017, how do you assess Hopson and his staff?

Re: 2017 football: grade the coaching staff

I picked C. 8 wins would generally deserve a B, but there were some pretty demoralizing home games this season. A couple of pretty good opportunities  against P5 teams were also squandered.

Re: 2017 football: grade the coaching staff

Solid "C"  for me. The team had several opportunities to get a signature win and came up empty. Eight wins is "decent", except when you consider our pitiful schedule this year. In this conference, you don't deserve a "B" unless you play in the conference championship game. An "A" is you win it.

Coaching staff gets a half letter-grade bump for exceeding everyone's expectations on W/L. But a half-letter grade demotion for failure to play the right QB.

And you get zero points or bumps for producing a good recruiting class on paper. You can't expect to be graded on those recruits until they factor into team results.

Re: 2017 football: grade the coaching staff

I chose D+.

Horrible inconsistencies in all phases.

Playing Keon while Griggs was dressed is inexcusable.

Fucking crazy TOs on D.

Game planning suspect.

B+ coaching staff is at worst 10-2 this year, maybe 11-1.

Can't count bowl game (or possible conf. champ. game) because circumstances would change.

Won't miss Dawson.

Agreed. If anybody wants to grade recruiting, post a different "pole" for that.

Griggs should have played a lot more against Tennessee.

Re: 2017 football: grade the coaching staff

I just can’t get past Howard over Griggs. It has to be something about Griggs not comprehending/understanding the playbook or something for Howard to get the edge the first part of the season. For that alone I award Hop/Dawson a solid C-....

Re: 2017 football: grade the coaching staff

I think our defense is coming of age. We have a team that has a lot of promise. Talent-wise on defense, we've made some significant improvement over the last two years and we have a chance for these young players to really be contributors in the secondary. I'm pleased with the down linemen we've got. Our future does look bright. However, they have got to sit down and really evaluate every competitive situation that we have. We have all the room in the world to get better. We shouldn't have had the record that we had this year.

The 2017 team definitely passed the eye test, which has not always been true post-Fedora.

And started against KY. Cast or not, if he is able to play, he plays over Keon. No discussion. This not being clear is a huge red flag.

C+. Had the bowl game not been such a beat down I’d go B or B-.  C+ is generous taking into account entire body of work

Watching OSU dominate a good USC squad right now and you can see a decent gap in the talent level between the Big Ten and PAC 12. Yes, we got blown out by FSU and it was worse than expected (based on Vegas #’s) but I have seen so many decent teams get blown out this year with Iowa over this same OSU team, UGA against Auburn and even on our level, Navy blowing out FAU and Arky St laying an egg against SMU. Then you have La Tech blow out SMU.....So much inconsistency this season across the board. The loss to FSU was bad but reflecting on the college season it wasn’t unique by any stretch.

I was surprised that most people at least gave a "C" grade. I feel like an *average* coaching staff would have been able to get more than 8 wins out of this year's team.

Found this about Dawson:

What is its relevance to what happened at QB this year? I have no idea. But if somebody were to say the same thing about USM football in 2017, it would at least seem relevant on the surface.
