Stupidest statement ever made by a sports journalist

For a long time, my winner was Buddy Diliberto's statement that his all-time favorite Saint was Renaldo Turnbull.

Wednesday afternoon, though, Matt Chernoff of 680 AM in Atlanta made the (incorrect) statement that UGA quarterback Jacob Eason is the "son of an NFL quarterback, Tony Eason."

I'm no UGA fan, but even I know that's bullshit.

680 has always been pretty awful... it's a lot of pointless guffawing, made-up off-topic anecdotes about how drunken and stupid the on-air "talent" is, etc., but the Tony Eason statement was a new low.

Re: Stupidest statement ever made by a sports journalist

His dads name is Tony and he did play college ball but don’t think he made it to the pros....if he was clearly referring to the former Pats qb he was way off.

I still listen to 680. Matt has zero business talking sports. His cohost, Chuck, knows a lot more about sports and also called several of our football games a few years back. He knows Southern Miss and mentions us often. In fact, when 680 recently did 24 straight hours of coverage leading up to the national championship he was representing the Golden Eagles....

Great picture!

He did say "NFL quarterback" unfortunately. It's as if he scanned Jacob's Wikipedia page, saw the name "Tony," and concluded his research there.

Chuck Oliver is by far the most knowledgeable person in Atlanta sports media, and he does pay attention to the better mid-major teams. Chernoff and Bryan Hoyt (who is the absolute worst) mock him for it. He's got the UCF win to throw back at them now, and that's good.

Chuck does his own college football program. It's syndicated, not a 680 thing, but it's much better than the 680 show.

Don't know if it's a regular thing, but when Buck Belue teams up with Chuck they're really good. The knowledge-to-guffaw ratio is much higher.

Yep, Chernoff, John Kincade, Steak and Golden bring almost nothing to that station. I’ve been listening to 680 since the late 90s and it will never cover sports like they truly did 20 years ago.

I guess I forgot Buddy D said that goofy shit.  Renaldo was an interesting story but he never really measured up...to damn skinny.  You could pick any one of the Dome Patrol or Hilliard or Archie or Meyers and so many more but Turnbull.  Sheeeyut!

I only heard about the Turnbull statement second-hand, but it was from a guy who I trust pretty thoroughly.

Any record of this statement has apparently been lost. Google was no help.

I never could listen to buddy. He was a great fan and loved his saints, but he was a dumbass about football. I used to laugh when he called a caller "nuttier than a squirrel".

Buddy did fall hook, line, and sinker for the whole Mike Ditka thing. Even before he coached a single game in New Orleans, I figured Ditka was a washed-up tough guy caricature at best.

Most knew he was a joke. The players certainly did. Only good thing he did was call new Orleans a shit hole town. Which it was and still is. If you drive around no east or treme the negroes throw garbage in their yards and the streets are filled with trash.

When I drive through New Orleans East, I like to get off the expressway, get out of my car, and start picking up garbage and putting it into a plastic supermarket bag. I try to catch peoples' eyes and give them a stare of shame to get my point across.

Buddy was a huge cheerleader of Ditka getting the job.  Didn't they do the Casino Magic radio show together anyway prior to him coaching the Saints?

I think you're right. Ditka had some kind of weird Buddy D connection even before he got the Saints job. Diliberto used his microphone to talk up Ditka.

Same with Renaldo Turnbull. Turnbull did a show with Buddy so Buddy called him his "favorite Saints player ever."
