Spring game report

From usm website:

April 21, 2018
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The spring campaign came to a close for the Southern Miss football team on a balmy Saturday afternoon in M.M. Roberts Stadium, where the Gold squad jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and held on for the 20-15 victory.

There were a couple of touchdowns in the air, including a 58-yard catch-and-run from Marcelo Rodriguez to Antawyn Fludd. Carter Hankins also entered the game in the second half and tossed a touchdown on his second attempt of the day, a 16-yarder to Quez Watkins on the heels of a 45-yard strike to Jaylond Adams.

Adams, who had a highly-impressive 27.4 YPC average last season, continued that on Saturday with two grabs for 73 yards. Fludd finished with three catches for 77 yards, and Watkins added five for 56 with the touchdown.

Keon Howard led the way through the air, completing 10 of his 15 passes for 124 yards. Jack Abraham was 10-for-16 for 103. On the ground, Steven Anderson showcased his power running abilities with six carries for 29 yards, recording a one-yard touchdown run as well. Tez Parks carried defenders with him on two fourth-quarter runs, ending with five carries for 29 yards. Howard ended with six attempts for a game-high 47 yards.

Defensively, LaMarque Davis had an interception while Allen Fails and Ty Williams each recorded fumbles. There were no kickoffs or punt coverages, but Parker Shaunfield connected on a 26- and 35-yard field goal.

Re: Spring game report

Sunherald.....

▪ Howard was indeed the best quarterback on the field, leading the Gold offense on three scoring drives in the first half — two field goals and one touchdown.

Howard had a touchdown toss wiped off his stat line when Quez Watkins dropped a pass in the end zone in the first half. The junior from Laurel finished 11-of-15 for 132 yards passing and ran six times for 53 yards.

Howard did make one mistake when he threw a ball into traffic on an attempt to connect with Watkins, but the ball fell to the ground as a harmless interception.

First-year transfer Jack Abraham had a promising spring, but that didn't quite play out during Saturday's scrimmage for the Black team. Abraham, who didn't have much time to get passes off for much of the scrimmage, completed 9-of-17 passes for 101 yards and threw one interception.

It was obvious that Howard was the more experienced of the two players. Howard is entering his third season at USM while Abraham has only been on campus for a little over three months after transferring in from Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Senior walk-on Carter Hankins took some chances downfield and almost every one of them paid off. He completed 3-of-3 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

▪ One other player who flashed on offense Saturday was Hinds Community College transfer De'Michael Harris.

The Vicksburg native showed nice quickness and had two carries for 14 yards on a pair of sweep plays. He caught three passes for 42 yards.

That sweep play hasn't paid off much for USM in the past, but Harris has a chance to break it for a big run on any snap.

▪ Senior running back George Payne appears to be close to being fully healthy after missing the entire 2017 season with a hip injury.

The Mobile native didn't have many big gainers, but he was solid when he touched the ball. He had nine carries for 20 yards.

▪ When the 6-foot, 207-pound Payne sat out last season, the Golden Eagles were often hurting in short yardage situations on offense.

With Payne back in the fold, it appears that offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson will have a pair of power backs to call on.

Redshirt freshman Stephen Anderson was impressive when he got his chances to carry the ball and has shown that he can catch the ball out of the backfield. He finished with six carries for 30 yards and a 1-yard touchdown.

Anderson, who is listed at 6-2, 242 pounds, has a violent style of running with the ball that USM hasn't featured in quite some time.

▪ D'Iberville product Tyler Barnes started for the Gold squad and had a solid game at safety.

Barnes, who narrowly missed out on intercepting a pass deep down the middle of the field, seems in good shape to step in as a starter at safety after USM lost both starters from a year ago.

His former D'Iberville teammate, Jacques Turner, was double-teamed for much of the game at defensive end. Turner said he has bulked up to 270 pounds, making him one of the bigger defensive ends USM has had in a while.

▪ Redshirt senior Darian Yancey is still listed at 6-foot-1, 250 pounds, but he looks much lighter and more mobile. He'll likely work the linebacker/defensive end hybrid spot and he should cover much more ground. He may weigh 230 pounds at this point.

▪ Senior running back T'Rod Daniels also had a nice day and showed off good speed. He had four carries for 40-yards, including a 2-yard TD run.

Re: Spring game report

American.....

Five weeks’ worth of spring training, and the annual Black and Gold spring game at Southern Miss produced mixed results.

Behind a touchdown run from T’Rod Daniels and a touchdown grab by Quez Watkins, the Gold team came away with a 20-15 victory Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

Jay Hopson said the team got the most important things accomplished.

"I felt we got most of everything in that we wanted to get in, schematically, and that's a plus,” he said. “You just want to go into August with everything installed. I felt like we've created some good competition at some critical spots. It'll be fun to watch these guys go through it in August."

Here are five things you need to know about training camp.

More: Southern Miss' QBs are among those with the most riding on their spring game performance

Unsolved mystery

Spring ended much the same way it began for the team’s quarterbacks: uncertain.

Junior Keon Howard and redshirt sophomore Jack Abraham put together the two best springs among all of the team’s signal-callers. Redshirt freshman Marcelo Rodriguez showed flashes of standout play but lacked the consistency of Howard and Abraham.

On Saturday, Howard was 10-of-15 for 124 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He was also credited with 47 rushing yards on six carries.

Abraham finished 10 for 16 with 103 yards through the air and an interception.

Both players struggled to find rhythm early on, but Howard found his footing late in the first half.

Marcelo Rodriguez and Carter Hankins accounted for the only touchdown passes of the game.

With nothing decided, Southern Miss will spend the rest of the offseason in limbo at quarterback. Of course, Kwadra Griggs missed the entire spring while recovering from an injury, which could cloud things further once fall camp rolls around.

Run game stands out

All spring, the running back group — which some postulated would be a weak spot in 2018 for the Golden Eagles — has been a bright spot. And Saturday was no different.

Daniels and redshirt freshman Steven Anderson scored touchdowns. According to the unofficial stats, Southern Miss totaled 188 yards on the ground on 36 carries.

George Payne, a redshirt senior coming off a hip injury, received the most carries. He toted the ball nine times for 20 hard-fought yards.

Rushing performances in spring games can be deceptive at times, especially in situations where the first- and second-team offensive lines are divvied up on each sideline, which was the case Saturday.

Southern Miss will add Trivenskey Mosley before fall camp, and redshirt freshman Darius Maberry could also join the fray sometime in July or August.

Hopson on the running backs: "Steven Anderson ran hard and George Payne had some good runs. Tez Parks really did well in the fourth quarter. Steven can be a great football player here. He's physical and gets better every day. He's just learning the running back position and he is a natural athlete. The sky's the limit for Steven."

Secondary success

Another spot thought to be somewhat suspect this season was the defensive backfield.

The secondary was gutted by graduation, losing eight players including all five starters from a season ago.

But there have been a number of bright spots along the way during spring training. Ty Williams, Rachuan Mitchell, Ernest Gunn, Trey Davis and Kris Reed each enjoyed plenty of success, which continued Saturday.

Williams recovered a fumble. Davis intercepted Abraham. Reed forced a fumble.

The Golden Eagle secondary also held the passing attack in check. Quarterbacks accounted for 367 yards on 26-of-38 passing.

Picasso Nelson Jr. (who did not play Saturday), along with Xavier Marion, Tyler Barnes and WyDale Flott have established themselves at safety.

The team is expected to welcome J.J. Jones, Ky’El Hemby and Nick Harper to the fold before fall camp.

It should be noted the team’s quarterback race has not been an accurate indicator of much to this point.

Neil McLaurin and Jordan Mitchell missed all of spring with injuries. Tim Jones and Reid Rials also missed significant time after getting banged up shortly after training camp began. None of those four participated in the spring game.

The landscape of the quarterback battle could shift dramatically once the group gets its full complement of weapons back. That also includes offensive lineman Drake Dorbeck, who also missed the majority of spring.

Quez the great

Watkins, a redshirt sophomore, is the clear-cut No. 1 option in the receiving corps for the Golden Eagles coming out of spring.

And he proved it Saturday, collecting 56 yards on five catches and a touchdown.

Watkins has what it takes to step right into the go-to guy role left vacant by Korey Robertson’s early departure.

Keon getting reps at QB is scary. Season ticket-o-meter will not get full with this kind of news.

Re: Spring game report

Keon did look better than last year but outside of the comeback at LaTech, that's not hard to do.  He got the majority of reps for the Gold with the better WR group while Abraham split his time with Marcelo.  And for some reason, Marcelo didn't have as many passes called for him.  No way to really compare them so I'm not sure what Patty Magee was thinking when he wrote that shit.

So I guess this means we still don't have a QB

Apparently we have more than a mere QB. We have an adopted son. And isn't a child's laughter the greatest gift of all?

Re: Spring game report

Hop controlled the whistle on QB contact.  He was really quick on it with Abraham and Rodriquez, to the point of blowing the play dead as soon as the offensive line was breached.  He held off on Keon and let the plays develop more before blowing the whistle on them.  The fact that they even give rushing yardage for Keon is crap, seeing that the defense wasn't allowed to touch QB's and they kept running Keon.  The playcaller for the Gold team seemed to have more experience at finessing the finer points of "no QB contact" playcalling than the OC for the black squad.  It took him several series to realize downfield passes and any play that needed time to develop was going to be a no-go.

I can see a school like UGA having a legit QB controversy with Fromm and Fields.......or even Bama(although Tua is clearly their future) but for Hop to keep giving Keon priority reps only tells me that once Griggs is healthy we are going to have a two qb competition again and that Keon and Griggs are really the only two in the mix. Abraham and Rod need to find another program if the best they can earn is a quick whistle with the backups.

When you look at our pathetic schedule a QB controversy is pretty much all we've got.

Re: Spring game report

We have 9 QBs listed on the roster.....9

Two of which I know won't play QB, but that's still 7. How is this an issue? This type of shit just blows my mind and gives me zero faith in our staff and future in football.

Dawson was on the Gold sidelines...not sure who called plays for Black.  More proof Keon had the advantages.

Re: Spring game report

I stand corrected then because Scottie has to be a better play caller.  Then again, with him calling more actual plays than Keon running the ball, he did out-call Dawson.
