Yes they did. I said he'd regret it at the time and my grandpa laughed at me.

One interesting thing about Curley at LSU is that he brought both coordinators from USM, demoted one after a season, and ran off the other one a year later. The dynamic that allowed him to succeed at USM was pretty unique, and it just wasn't there at LSU. Chad Loup was no Favre, for example.

Bower's O got stale at the end of his run, but I still send a thank you card to lswhoo every Xmas....

Jeff gave me plenty of fun evenings that I still 'almost' remember.....

I still have a bad taste in my mouth how he was released.....

The way, yes.

The timing, at least 6 years too late.

you know that was my point....5/6 is a fair number....

it just rubs me wrong in a variety of ways....

Re: Trying to decide

Jeff dug his own grave. To paraphrase one of his players . When you win 10-11 games a year in a big conference you can be an asshole and a jerk. But When you win 6 or 7 in Cusa, you don't have that right.

I did get the sense that the CUSA officiating crews were sick of him for the last few years, and maybe some other C-USA people outside USM, and that was a liability. Yeah, most coaches give the officials a hard time, but there's a right way and a wrong way.

And now I hear he's been at some practices helping Jay , the son he never had with the offense. Well fucking just great. Let's run the ball up the middle three times in a row again.

the point is they left him in the game with a bum knee too long.....

once they allowed that to happen, and knew he would leave soon, it would've been easier to let it play out with grace....

Jeff wasn't going to leave. He'd still be coaching us if he wasn't fired. Giannini was his boss. The donors paid his tab. Don't bite the hand that's been feeding you by being an asshole to them and expect to be rewarded.

The only possible thing they could have done differently would have been to give him an ultimatum. Going into 2007, you tell him "we want to see real fireworks this season, Jeff, and I want you to promise to resign quietly if we don't. That's the deal, take it or leave it."

It sounds like they pretty much did that at some point, but Coach didn't take it seriously enough. Maybe he thought 9 easy wins in 2006 had bought him some more time than it actually had. At the time it felt like a positive step, but 2007 was just bad.

I have no issue with the way he was released, but many do, hence the qualification. It was so out of character for Gmumble to have a set and make a decision.  People were floored.

That is part of our problem.  JB being sent packing after waaaay too many years of 6-5 or so brought us back around to EJ after Fedora.  Too many blue hairs bent out of shape by the program actually advancing.

Personally, I like him.  Great person.  It was past time.

that's plausible.....I would assume Ace would most likely have the most insight.....

however, I'm certain he won't share his thoughts on this one.....and I wouldn't slight him if he didn't....

the way I remember it he was going to step down in a couple of years after '06.....

the bottom line is the number you came with earlier......that's when it needed to happen....

Don't overlook the Tennessee schools. People just assume Vanderbilt fans are smart. Tennessee, well, you'll never be lonely pulling for them. Even Memphis is doing well lately, and there's basketball.

The Hell you say? I saw some lady babbling during the Frozen Pizza Websight Bowl that just a "few Fans"  wanted a change.

I can confirm. My brother was pissed when Bower got fired. My wife was pissed. The Alabama and LSU fans at work were pissed.

Of all those people, and me, guess who actually went to games?

Obviously the slow one after the Boise debacle.

I actually checked out for several years after the 2004 season and stopped buying tickets. You didn't have to be Jimmy the Greek to predict 2005-2007.

I did go to the Boise game in 2012.

Let's see. Bower wanted to go to Boise early because coaches in the south said, "go a day early and do your walk through,  get used to the altitude". G said no. G put them on an old L1011 or DC10 charter that had an engine fire when they landed. Scared the living crap out of the team. They showed up the night before the game. I went. The team struggled obviously. It was awful. Blame Jeff all you want but G had a big hand in a lot of things. Of course, you can write, "suck it up and play ball." I never played but as understand a lot of it is mental.

Let's cut funding for recruiting. Let's not pay for stamps. Let's not pay for phone bills. Let's leave the mud hole and Jeff's father put in a temporary building for the players to dress in. I am not saying Jeff was perfect. Nobody is but a lot of these administrators tied his hands. That mud hole (field house) that went on hold did a lot of damage to recruiting. "Who else you got?"

He planned to stay two years (2009).  G, Shelby, some oil guy and the car dealers fought him. Shelby, G's wife and other administrators "loosing" their cool publicly? Bad form. Martha was doing "other stuff" when this all went down and was caught off guard. It was the perfect storm.

My opinion is he should have taken another job any place and started over. years before.  I have told him that many times. I would have been happy, he would have been happy, USM fans would have been happy and we could have had Ellis Johnson earlier. The car dealers and G got their cocktail lounges and that in the end is all that matters to them. No better conference, no better teams, just sit and "we are gonna be fine."

I am not writing anymore on the subject. It was handled wrong way before Jeff was fired. It's in the past and I don't care anymore financially. One could write a book on some of the nonsense that goes on at USM's athletic department. Piss away boys!

Only my thoughts. I made most of it up.
