Rebuilding Since 2012

Does it seem fans continue to preach ‘we’re rebuilding’ as an excuse for losing.  Long rebuilding process

Re: Rebuilding Since 2012

Our path was inevitable regardless of the poor decisions made. Replacing 0-12 or 1-11 seasons with .500 ball would not have written a better ending. We are no different than Colorado State or ECU today. They spent more money and expanded facilities but in the end they are a shell of what they once were with nothing to show for it…..just newer stadiums with less fans.  Give it time because UAB is the latest faux gem chasing something that won’t translate into anything tangible. They are about to move to the AAC that is about to lose Memphis and Tulane after Houston, UCF and Cinci bolted. The end result will have them playing Tulsa, USF and the leftovers from the MWC teams minus SDSU and Boise. If UAB had half a brain cell they would join the Sun Belt and be the top program and set the standard. They would have drivable competition with higher attendance. Zero chance they see the same experience with former MWC teams traveling to Birmingham.

Every small college became a FBS program and raided our fat recruiting basket that was once filled with kids that didn’t get a scholarship to a SEC program. Kids today pick schools with new erector set stadiums closer to home and the playground is now even in the G5. Our focus should have been on joining the Sun Belt 4 years ago because you would now have 2-3 seasons of regional play and competition vs unnecessary play against Charlotte or ODU.

We wont ever get back to what we once were, so I don't know if "rebuilding" is an accurate term. The landscape of college football has changed drastically in the past 20 years and we are one of many teams affected. Some were affected positively. Some negatively. Some were small schools. Some were larger schools.

Those hurt:
  Tennessee
  Nebraska
  Southern Miss
  Miami
  etc, etc, etc

Those helped:
  Oregon
  UCF
  Louisville
  Boise State
  etc, etc, etc

Our history is just that: history. The "golden era" of Southern Miss football has passed. Now with that said, in no way is getting bludgeoned by Troy at The Rock acceptable. We can be a better program than what we have shown in recent years, but we won't every be the program we were prior to this modern era (tv contracts, recruiting services, conference realignments, etc) of college football.

We need to lose the mindset of "rebuilding" and instead focus on fielding a consistently respectable G5 team.

Re: Rebuilding Since 2012

It's an unanswerable question, but I believed and still believe that USM missed a huge opportunity with the AAC.

What was so scary about it? It was nothing more than the status quo of ten years prior, dressed up with a different name. The alternative was, well... this. We got the "just fine" talk from GDunn, Nasty Bunch, 99beers, etc., but I called this way back then. You don't pussy out on something you did 10 years ago unless you're actively willing to define yourself as 'over the hill.'" This is forehead-slappingly obvious shit.

"Something to hope for" is one of the three essentials to happiness and it was taken from us, by Giannini, but also by the fans who accepted this trash.

Re: Rebuilding Since 2012

The idea that G had a voice or influence on our trajectory into a better conference is misleading. Wild Bill couldn’t have made any difference when it comes to getting us in the AAC. Unless the Hattiesburg media market climbed out of the 160’s rankings into the top 100 nobody was going to tell the world wide leader how to pick and choose and spend their cash…….and before y’all play the Southern Miss reputation card let’s not forget we couldn’t even sellout a home game against top 10 TCU with the conference on the line. Even during our special season in 2011 our last home game against Memphis only drew 26K and we were 9-2. So if you have no media market and you have a lazy fan base what exactly was G/USM going to bring ESPN/AAC?

yep 26,000 for memphis yet many were butt hurt because we didn't go to dallas where we would have had 35,000 fans there.....smh

Forget the number of fans. Beating a mediocre Penn State team is 10x better than beating a mediocre Nevada team. People still talk about the beating a mediocre Pitt team in the Liberty Bowl as if it were something magical.

FYI, Houston got the pleasure of kicking the shit out of Penn State in Dallas that year. It was a dumb decision then and it’s a dumb decision in hindsight.

Re: Rebuilding Since 2012

At the time I wanted us to play Penn St even if they were not the program they traditionally were but looking back it was the right call for the kids. Fedora was on the Eagle Hour about a month ago and was directly asked why Hawaii. The players decided. Reasoning made sense as most of the kids on the team had never been to an ocean and this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for them to see a place like Hawaii. They deserved it.

We are made for the Sun Belt based on revenue and support and candidly so is ECU and UAB. If the AAC adds Colorado St and Air Force as rumored that only confirms we need a regional conference. Once Memphis and Tulane go round 2 of Big 12 expansion why would I care about more money to play Tulsa and USF?

i am not debating whether it was a good decision or not.  i am just amazed that there were people who actually believed we would have  35,000 at the sandusky bowl.
